Workforce Housing in Charlottesville:
Two significant results of the recent housing boom have been a dramatic increase in the price of housing and the adoption of more restrictive land use regulations. As a result, the construction of workforce housing has slowed. With incomes not keeping pace with housing prices, the fabric of our community— teachers, firefighters, police officers—often do not have housing opportunities in the communities in which they serve. With households spending a higher perhabitat for humanitycentage of their income on housing and commuting longer distances, high housing costs will undercut the efficiency of our public institutions.  Although the region has made significant strides toward creating work-force housing opport-unities, barriers still remain to workforce housing construction. Strong partnerships between private, public and non-profit sectors will help ensure that the people who serve our community can afford to live here.
